In plumbing and piping, a nipple is a fitting consisting of a short piece of pipe, usually with a male pipe thread at each end, for connecting two other fittings or valves. The length of the nipple is usually specified by the overall length with threads.  

Nipple fittings for irrigation system pipes are commonly used as adapters from one connection type to another – typically PVC straight-end hose and pipe. Unlike metal, PVC fittings never rust, scale, or pit, and will provide many years of maintenance-free service and extended system life. In irrigation pipe applications, longer nipples are usually used to elevate sprinklers above the ground.

PVC pipe nipple fittings are mainly used in low-pressure irrigation pipe systems, although manufacturers have been working to make them handle higher pressures better.

Schedule 80 pipe is the dark-gray, thicker-walled version of the white-colored Schedule 40 pipe. Manufacturers make them in two different colors for easier identification. For jobs that require a higher pressurization, schedule 80 pipe is a better choice. Schedule 80 pipe is designed with a thicker wall, for more strength and high-pressure tolerance for commercial irrigation applications. (Most PVC pipes and fittings have a maximum pressure rating listed so you know what they can handle. Typically, this is listed in pounds per square inch or PSI.)

The amount of pressure a pipe is rated for varies based on size, but a 4-inch Schedule 80 PVC pipe, for instance, is rated at 320 PSI, while a schedule 40 PVC pipe of the same size is only rated at 220 PSI. You can find Schedule 80 pipe used most often in heavy-duty commercial and industrial applications.

Material reinforcement is uniformly placed in stress concentration areas for substantially improved pressure handling capability.

Spears’ PVC pipe nipples also offer exceptional chemical and corrosion resistance in sprinkler and irrigation systems, as well as high temperature ratings. Spears’ PVC thermoplastic can handle fluids at service temperatures up to 140°F, allowing a wide range of process applications, including corrosive fluids. They can’t, however, be used with compressed air or gases.

Note: A "close nipple" has virtually no unthreaded area, so when screwed tightly between two female fittings, very little of the nipple remains exposed. A close nipple can only be unscrewed by gripping one threaded end with a strap wrench or by using a specialty tool known as a nipple wrench (or an internal pipe wrench). This tool grips the inside of the pipe, leaving the threads undamaged. When the ends are of two different sizes, it is called a reducer (or reducing nipple).
