Tackle Residential & Light Commercial Irrigation with a Hunter PGV Valve

An irrigation valve is the heart of your irrigation system, which is why you need reliable, top-of-the-line valves to ensure impeccable performance and results. Hunter’s product line features durable, high-grade sprinkler valves that get the job done.

You Can Count on Your Hunter Sprinkler Valves to Work Reliably on Landscape Applications for Years to Come

Build your irrigation system on innovation and performance— it starts with a Hunter PGV valve. Hunter sprinkler valves work in a wide range of applications, from low flow to high flow, clean water to dirty water, low pressure to high pressure.

Introducing: The Hunter PGV Valve
The PGV valve from Hunter is a hard-working, heavy-duty series that offers the best features of Hunter sprinkler valves into one product line. This Hunter irrigation valve is built with enough durability to handle the rigors of most residential and light commercial sites. With availability in numerous configurations, you can make your PGV valve work for you and your project needs.
Configurations

  • For smaller landscapes: four 1” body configurations including angle, globe, male x male, male x barb
  • For larger landscapes: 1 ½” and 2” globe or angle models

No matter which configuration you choose for your application, all models feature durable, high-grade construction and a rugged diaphragm that supports and prevents stress failure so you can get the most use out of your sprinkler valve for years to come.

You can expect the following features of your Hunter PGV Vale:

  • Quick and easy valve activation, thanks to external and internal manual bleed
  • A double-beaded diaphragm seal design ensures superior leak-free performance
  • DC-latching solenoids enable battery-powered controllers
  • Hassle-free maintenance thanks to captive bonnet bolts
  • Allows use of Hunter’s micro-irrigation products with low flow capabilities
  • Hassle-free service with encapsulated 24 VAC solenoid and captive plunger
  • 150-degree Fahrenheit temperature rating
  • Pressure range recommendation between 20 and 150 PSI

Take note of these Hunter sprinkler valve operating specifications:

Flow rate:

  • PGV 100: 0.2 to 30 GPM
  • PGV 101: 0.2 to 30 GPM

It’s easy to see how Hunter PGV valves combine usability with performance to create an irrigation system product that works the way you need it to for years to come! What’s more, all Hunter valves are 100% water-tested to ensure reliable operation once installed. Can your old sprinkler valve say the same?

Basic Hunter PGV Valve Operations & Parts
Your Hunter irrigation valve has two main components: the lower half known as the valve body the upper half known as the valve bonnet. Below, you’ll discover some of the common parts in your sprinkler valve and how each moving part helps the valve operate.

Basic Valve Parts

Wiring: The wiring of your irrigation valve will lead to the solenoid, which electrically actuates the valve.

Flow Control Handle: In the middle of the valve, you’ll find the flow control handle. This regulates the amount of water that passes through the valve when the valve opens.

Manual Bleeder Screw: Located in the center of the flow control handle, the manual bleeder screw manually actuates the valve.

Accu-Set Pressure Regulator: The accu-set pressure regulator is a field-installed accessory that allows you to dial in the exact pressure you want for after the valve.

Turning Your Valve ON/OFF
For manual valve operation, take the solenoid and make a quarter turn, counterclockwise— you should hear the water start to flow— then let go of the solenoid. After you’ve done your field check on the valve heads and you’re ready to turn the valve off, simply turn the solenoid a quarter turn clockwise. You’ll hear the water stop to signal that you’ve correctly shut off the solenoid.

An In-Depth Look At Your Hunter PGV Vale Operates

The center portion of your PGV valve is the working part of the valve, called the diaphragm.

On top of the diaphragm is a center stem that goes up to a flow control handle— this piece regulates how far the diaphragm opens to allow water to go through when the valve does open.

You’ll find the manual bleeder screw on top of the flow control handle— opening this bleeder screw allows water to evacuate out through that hole, allowing the diaphragm to open, thus opening the valve with it.

The solenoid receives the electricity from the control. This piece of the valve has a plunger on the bottom; when it’s electrically activated, the plunger will rise. Once raised, the small rubber gasket comes off of its port, allowing the water to go down the exhaust port. This action decreases the pressure on top of the diaphragm, allowing it to move up, and allowing the water to flow out to the field.

The valve’s diaphragm operates off surface area differential. It sits horizontally in the valve, with the top surface being a much larger diameter than the bottom side— this difference in surface area is what creates the differential.

The top portion of the valve has a bonnet chamber, when at idle, the diaphragm sits down in the diaphragm seat, where there’s no escape of the water on top because the plunger is down, not allowing water to escape; therefore, pressure is sitting on top of the diaphragm.

When the valve is turned on electrically, the controller prompts the plunger to raise, allowing the pressure and water that sits on top of the diaphragm to escape down the exhaust port and downstream.

Once that water escapes, the pressure on top of the diaphragm drops, allowing it to move upward off of its seat, resulting in the water being able to escape downstream to the heads.
