How to Use Tenacity Herbicide
Tenacity herbicide works in both pre-emergent and post-emergent applications. It’s helpful to distinguish between the two main types of weed control since they do differ slightly in terms of their purpose; one designated for killing unwanted weeds before they sprout; the other to kill those that have already grown.
- Pre-Emergent Herbicides- Pre-emergent weed control allows you to prevent weeds from sprouting and popping up from underneath the ground. Since Syngenta Tenacity acts as a pre-emergent herbicide, it will kill weeds before the seed sprouts as temperatures begin to warm, usually in early spring.
- Post-Emergent Herbicides- Post-emergent herbicides kill weeds that have already sprouted. Because Tenacity herbicide acts as post-emergent weed control, it will ensure that pesky plants will not spread and invade the rest of your grass. It’s best to use a post-emergent anytime between the spring and fall months.
Syngenta’s Tenacity herbicide label gives landscapers and contractors the best of both worlds. You can get tough-to-control weeds under control while eliminating weeds at seeding so new grass can flourish and grow.
Tenacity’s Active Feature Ingredient
Tenacity herbicide uses mesotrione as its active ingredient.
Mesotrione is based on a naturally occurring compound produced by a bottlebrush plant known as Callistemon citrinus. This bottlebrush plant inhibits photosynthesis in susceptible plant species. The mesotrione is absorbed by plants through the roots, shoots, and leaves and then distributed through the plant by xylem and phloem translocation. This process hinders and restricts the primary plant function, thus keeping unwanted weed and grass species from growing and ultimately resulting in the death of the plant.
Tenacity is a systemic herbicide based on its mode of action explained above. A systemic herbicide is absorbed and moved through the plant’s system— the main goal being to kill the entire plant from the inside out. Contrastingly, contact herbicides only kill the part of the plan that the herbicide comes in contact with.
Weed and Grass Species Affected by Tenacity Herbicide
Control troublesome weeds in their most important phase of seed germination and establishment throughout the entire year. The list of weeds controlled include:
- Creeping Charlie
- Wild Violet
- See label for an exhaustive list
Tenacity is the only herbicide to selectively controls over 46 broadleaf and grass species! Because Tenacity is a selective herbicide, it will not kill all lawn types, but more so concentrate on the specific weed and grass list briefly listed above. Surrounding grass will not be affected, unlike non-selection herbicides.
You can achieve the best weed control in typically two applications in three-week intervals. Simply spray on the lawn or property in pre-emergent and post-emergent applications. The 8 oz bottle of Tenacity weed killer includes a syringe for spot treatments.
Upon spraying the Tenacity, you and the homeowner will notice a white appearance on the lawn. Not to worry— the white weeds that appear after your Tenacity herbicide application lets homeowners know that the weed treatment is working! White grass tips are typically mowed off with subsequent mowing; however, some turfgrasses may experience bleaching.
What’s more, mesotrione, the weed killer’s active ingredient, has been granted reduced-risk status for turf applications by the EP.
Please note that Syngenta Tenacity should not be applied through any type of irrigation system, nor should it be applied on any golf courses or putting greens and maintain a 5' buffer between treated areas and putting greens. You should not be applying Tenacity on turfgrasses sensitive to this herbicide application like bentgrass or Poa annua.
