Find NDS Pop Up Emitters for Landscape Areas with Poor Drainage

Pop-up drainage emitters by NDS are the perfect solution when you need stormwater to be diverted away from structures, foundations and erosion-prone landscapes.

NDS is a name we trust, from expansion repair and compression couplings, to spring, swing check and ball valves! And its pop-up emitters live up to that name, too, reliably allowing water captured by drainage system grates, catch basins, channel drains, dry wells, downspouts and roof gutters to flow through the drainage pipe to safe or useful areas.

A pop-up emitter (also known as a pop-up water relief valve) is a clean-looking alternative to normal drain grates whenever you need storm water runoff to be diverted in areas where drainage is poor.

We carry NDS and Rain Bird pop-up drainage emitters. When it comes time to buy a pop-up water drainage emitter, the oldest – and most reliable – name in the game is NDS. Whether you need an expansion repair or compression coupling or a spring, swing check or ball valve, NDS offers a full line of products for irrigation, plumbing, pool and spa and industrial applications. Rain Bird is a leading global manufacturer and provider of irrigation products and services

How pop-ups work in a drainage system

A pop-up style emitter is an innovative drainage alternative that’s normally closed, but during a storm, water flows from French drains, channel drains, catch basins, dry wells like the NDS Flo-Well, downspouts and gutter systems, causing a buildup of hydrostatic pressure. In that case, the emitter lid pops up and allows water to be discreetly diverted away from erosion-prone landscapes, foundations and structures without worrying about debris or critters clogging the line.

Once the flow dies down, the lid shuts until the next heavy rainfall. The good thing about pop-up rain water emitters is that if there’s no steady flow of water, the lid stays shut. That means no debris can make its way into the pipe. It’s a great alternative to traditional drain grates that have a tendency to collect rocks, dirt or leaves that'll eventually clog the line.

When it comes to their pop-up emitter products for drainage, NDS’ and Rain Bird’s designs are easy to install and replace if broken. They also blend into landscaping and are low profile so that they won’t interfere with mowing.

Here’s a roundup of our product offerings:

NDS - 4" Pop-Up Drainage Emitter with Elbow

The NDS 4-inch pop-up drainage emitter with a 4-inch elbow fits sewer and drain pipe, acting as the discharge point of a system of drainage. They open easily when needed to allow water to flow freely from the pipe and away from areas with poor drainage.

The elbow includes a ¼-inch drain hole to eliminate standing water (especially important for colder climates, where the water can freeze).

Additional Features:

  • Manufactured from 100 percent recycled HDPE
  • Reduces trip hazard posed by open drains
  • Pop-up emitter top keeps rodents and debris out of system
  • Low-rise to avoid interfering with mowers
  • Allows water to be diverted and released to water-safe areas
  • Allows drainage water captured by grates, catch basins, channel drains, Flo-Well, downspouts and roof gutter systems to flow through the drainage pipe and away from structural foundations to safe or useful areas
  • Spring automatically retracts — closes and prevents damage from lawn mowers
  • Blends into the surrounding landscapes

NDS - 6" Pop-Up Drainage Emitter Cap

NDS - 3" & 4" Pop-Up Drainage Emitter Cap

We also offer the following pop-up emitter products by Rain Bird:

Rain Bird - Drainage Pop-Up Relief Valve with 4" PVC Elbow and Hub Fitting Adapter

As drainage pipes fill and build up slight pressure, the cover rises to allow the excess water to escape. Once the water is discharged the pressure drops and a stainless-steel spring automatically retracts the cover to its closed flush position.

The flush design of the product ensures that it blends well into the surrounding area. It is manufactured from a structurally foamed High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) with a UV inhibitor to reduce sun damage. Typical application is at the discharge end of a drainage pipe, away from a poorly drained area. Can be installed in either a vertical or horizontal position.

  • Pop-up valve body manufactured from structurally foamed High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
  • Elbow manufactured from PVC, includes 1/4” drain hole to eliminate standing water
  • UV stabilized to protect from sun degradation
  • Spring-loaded cover rises 1/2" to discharge excess drainage water in system
  • Spring automatically retracts cover to closed position after excess water is discharged
  • Can be used in both vertical and horizontal position
  • Stainless steel spring to prevent rusting
  • Made in the USA

  • Sold without elbow and hub fitting adapter

NDS pop-up emitter reviews

Check out all the positive reviews for NDS’ pop-up drainage emitters, which has a 4.8 out of 5 overall rating on Amazon! Here’s what three verified Amazon purchasers had to say:

“This is a quality product. Solid plastic with free moving pop up that always comes back down,” says Jason M. Massaro.

“My experience is that these pop-ups keep critters from crawling up the pipe and into the gutter, and eventually on your roof, which some critters will destroy. Excellent product,” says James S.

“I bought and installed three of these. I absolutely recommend them,” says Mercutio.

Pop-Up Emitter Installation

The emitters themselves aren’t a standalone solution. They need to be attached to the drainage pipe  with an elbow (we sell them with or without, see above). You’ll also need to make sure you properly dig a shallow trench leading to a swale. That way, you can be sure the water will be successfully diverted away from the poor drainage area, structure or erosion-prone landscape in question and toward a more desirable or useful location.

In order to allow for proper flow, you’ll also need to make sure the drain pipe is sloped correctly. Every site is different, but a good starting point is a 2 percent slope.

When you connect the elbow, make sure the drainage hole is pointed down when you slide it onto the drainage pipe. You want to make sure you’re just below the top of the finished grade, so that when you backfill, the sod will be right beneath the ring around the pop-up.

If the drainage pipe is smooth-walled Schedule 40 PVC and you want a tighter fit, we carry the following for your system:

Multi Fittings - 6" PVC Adapter Coupling Sewer To Sch40 H X H

Multi Fittings - 4" Adapter Coupling Sewer To Sch40 H X H

If you’re dealing with corrugated drain pipe instead of Schedule 40 PVC and want a tighter fit, try one of these couplers we carry:

ADS - 6" Internal Coupling-Corrugated

  • For use with 6-inch-diameter, corrugated pipe
  • Made of polyethylene
  • Internal coupler with barbs for a tight, secure fit

ADS - 4" Internal Corrugated Coupler

  • For use with 4-inch-diameter, corrugated pipe
  • Made of polyethylene
  • Internal coupler with barbs for a tight, secure fit

ADS - 3" External Corrugated Coupling

For use with 3-inch-diameter, corrugated pipe

NDS Flo-Well

If you’re installing a dry well at the same time as pop-up emitters for storm runoff water, we carry the NDS 4” Flo-Well Surface Inlet with Grate.

NDS Flo-Well is a manufactured dry well that is an easy to install and sustainable solution for storm water runoff in areas that suffer from poor drainage. Used independently or as part of a larger storm water drainage management system, Flo-Well units collect, retain, and discharge storm water on-site, offering a gravel-free alternative to a traditional dry well.

Units are modular and can be connected in series or stacked to meet a variety of project needs and accommodate higher volumes of water. The NDS Flo Well is easy to install and does not require heavy equipment. It is environmentally friendly, made from 100% recycled materials and filters storm water naturally through subsurface, reducing pollutants and helps replenish ground water tables by discharging storm water on site.

Catch basins

Installing a catch basin at the same time as your pop-up drainage emitters for stormwater runoff?

We carry several NDS catch basins — all made of polyolefin, versus traditional concrete. Poly catch basins and components offer more strength, lower water absorption and resistance to chemicals, UV rays and freeze/thaw cycles. They’re also not degraded by salt, oil and most acids and alkalis.

Today’s catch basins should also be flexible and easy to install. That’s why we’re particularly fond of the NDS - 12" 2-Opening Next Generation Catch Basin. This 12x12 catch basin – the 1200NGB - offers an inlet/outlet that adjusts to three different positions. Sewer or drain pipes can be connected at different heights and sizes via universal outlet adapters. This gives you superior versatility and ease of installation. It also saves you time and money!

It works with the NDS Open Slide and NDS Plug Slide for the 1200NGB, as well as the NDS 6” Universal Adapter Plug3” and 4” Universal Locking Outlet and 6” Universal Locking Outlet.
