Find the Best Ball Valves for Irrigation – Brass, PVC and Bronze

Ball valves serve as the gate keepers for any irrigation job. These shutoff valves control the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball with a hole bored through the center. Sandwiched between two seats, this ball is especially useful for low-flow situations.

A ball-style valve can be operated manually with a handle or automated with an electric or pneumatic actuator.

Ball valves are also called quarter-turn valves, because they require just that — a quarter of a turn — to move the hollowed-out ball. The ball blocks the path once you turn the valve handle.

Ball valves (or quarter turn valves) tend to be more reliable than globe valves. Globe valves require a washer and a tight friction fit between the seat and washer, and if either of these wear out (which they do over time), leaks start. Ball valves are much simpler in construction.

Need a ball valve for irrigation applications? Here’s a closer look at what we offer!

PVC irrigation ball valves

Ball valves made of PVC are cost-effective, lead-free and not prone to corrosion. However, they’re weaker, so they offer lower pressure ratings for irrigation than brass and bronze. They’re also not for temperatures higher than 140 degrees Fahrenheit and are less resistant to chlorine than bronze.

Need a PVC irrigation ball valve with socket ends? We carry this 1" PVC Ball Valve Socket. It’s also available in the following sizes: 4”, 3” and ¾".

Features:

  • Deluxe PVC valve EPDM rubber seat - EPDM stem O-ring
  • Working temperature Range: 41 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit
  • 150 PSI working pressure at 73 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Suitable for both Schedule 40 and 80 PVC pipe
  • Shock-resistant PVC body, ball and handle (2-1/2" - 4" have a polypropylene ball)
  • Variety of water supply, waste water, chemical feed and irrigation applications, for residential, commercial, industrial, marine and agricultural use
  • NSF/ANSI Standard 61 & 372 certified (0921/0921S series only)
  • NSF approved 1/2" to 2" only
  • White PVC body with black PVC handle

Looking for a threaded PVC irrigation ball valve? We carry this 1" PVC Ball Valve Thread X Thread. It’s also available in the following sizes: 3”, 2”, 1 ½” and ½”.

Features:

  • 150 PSI working pressure at 73 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Temperature rating: 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit
  • EPDM seats/EPDM O-ring seal
  • White PVC molded body with black PVC handle

We also carry a threaded, 1 ¼” PVC ball valve for irrigation by Boshart Industries with the following features:

  • BII PVC molded-in-place Ball Valve
  • Working temperature range 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit
  • 150 PSI working pressure at 73 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Suitable for both Schedule 40 and 80 PVC pipe
  • Variety of water supply, waste water, swimming pool, chemical feed and irrigation applications for residential, commercial, industrial, marine and agriculture use
  • NSF/ANSI Standard 372 Certified

Another great option made of PVC for irrigation is American Granby’s 2-1/2" Socket Ball Valve.

Features include:

  • Heavy-duty, thermoplastic, white PVC (Type 1, Grade 1) construction
  • Materials meet NSF standards
  • Meets ASTM 2467 Schedule 80 requirements
  • White body, red handle
  • Available with PTFE or EPDM seats providing excellent chemical resistance
  • EPDM O-ring stem seal
  • 150 PSI working pressure at 73 degrees Fahrenheit water, non-shock
  • Maintenance-free, compact design
  • Severe shock loads and misalignment stress are absorbed by the valve body, not the ball and seat, minimizing the chance of uneven wear and leakage
  • Imported

Need a compact PVC irrigation ball valve? Compact ball valves are one-piece, molded PVC valves with a simple but effective design. They’re mainly used in irrigation systems, water supply, septic tank, waste water systems and general applications that aren’t considered industrial.

We offer Spears' 1" PVC Compact Socket Ball Valve and Spears’ 1" PVC Compact Ball Valve Thread.

Both are also available in the following sizes: 4”, 3”, 2”, 1½", ½" and ¾".

Features include:

  • Chemical and corrosion-resistant PVC or CPVC construction
  • Economical, sealed unit
  • Schedule 80, full-bore design
  • High-impact, polypropylene handle
  • Spears single O-ring, Safe-T-Shear® stem design
  • PDM O-rings
  • PTFE/HDPE floating seat design
  • Sizes 1/2" to 6" pressure-rated to 150 PSI at 73 degrees Fahrenheit
  • NSF-certified for potable water use
  • Assembled with silicone-free, water-soluble lubricant

Brass irrigation ball valves

Ball valves made of brass are durable with lower levels of lead than traditional bronze. They’re suitable for most irrigation applications, although they’re more costly and susceptible to breakdown in high levels of chlorine.

A full port (or full bore) ball valve has a straight flow path where there is no reduction of flow as it travels through the valve. In other words, the internal diameter of the pipe or tubing at the inlet and outlet of the valve has the same diameter as the interior of the ball valve.

Need a full port brass ball valve for irrigation>? We carry Nibco’s 3/4" 600 PSI Full Port Brass Ball Valve. It’s also available in the following sizes: 2”, 1 ½", 1”, 1 ½" and 1 ¼".

Features include:

  • Lead-free with solder-end connections for bubble-tight shutoff
  • PTFE seats and lead-free ball exhibit high corrosion resistance properties
  • Ideal for hot/cold water applications

We also carry Watertronic’s 1/4 Turn Ball Valve, 1/4" MPT X 1/4" FPT.

Bronze irrigation ball valves

Bronze offers high ductility (resists cracking), corrosion resistance and low cost. Traditionally, they haven’t been used for potable water because they contained lead, but new lead-free options are now available.

Looking for a bronze irrigation ball valve with sweat ends? Sweat fittings have a nonthreaded joint with a diameter slightly larger than the pipe. They slip onto the pipe, then when hot solder is applied, the solder seeps into the gap and fuses the fitting to the pipe.

We offer a 1" Bronze Ball Valve with sweat ends.

This full port ball valve has a larger-pattern body suitable for most any application. The EPDM O-ring and PTFE packing gland stem assures reliable and smoother operation requiring less torque to operate. The PTFE seats reduce friction, thus prolonging the life of the valve. The ball is chrome-plated brass. The nickel-plated handle is corrosion resistant.

  • T-2000 CSA-certified for use with natural, manufactured, mixed, liquid petroleum, and LP gas/air mixtures.
  • T-2000 UL-listed 3LZW for LP, natural and manufactured gases; to 250 PSI maximum.
  • Factory Mutual-approved for fire protection service.
  • Saturated steam (WSP): 150 PSI
  • Cold working pressure (CWP): 600 PSI
  • Conforms to MSS Standard Practice 110
  • Solder end connections comply with ANSI/ASME B16.18

We also carry Watts Regulator’s 1-1/2" Bronze Ball Valve With Sweat Ends.
